NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: Daytona State Rocket League Esports team makes history with first NJCAAE National Championship

Valorant, Overwatch 2 and Super Smash Bros. teams also competed in postseason

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (December 18, 2024) – The Daytona State College Rocket League Esports team made history on Friday, December 13, capturing the 2024 NJCAAE Fall Premier Series National Title, beating No. 6 seed Wake Tech 3-0 and 3-1 in the Grand Finals double elimination best of five matchup.

"Winning two national championships in two consecutive semesters is a remarkable achievement for our Esports program and a testament to the dedication of Esports Coordinator Sebastian Morales and our student-athletes," said DSC President Tom LoBasso. "Daytona State continues to excel in the classroom and in our athletic programs, solidifying our reputation as a leader in higher education and competitive sports."

The championship game was played remotely, and the DSC Rocket League team dominated from the outset, taking the first series 3-0 and then winning the bracket reset match 3-1.

“Our Rocket League team excelled during the regular season going 15-0, and knew they’d be facing their greatest challenge in the postseason,” said Morales. “Their teamwork was exceptional, and I couldn't be prouder of what they accomplished.”

The Falcons entered NJCAAE postseason play as the No. 1 seed and powered through their early matches, beating Heartland Community College 3-0 and Columbia Basin College 3-1 on Dec. 8. The Falcons lost to Wake Tech 3-2 in a tough match in Round 3 on Dec. 12 but rebounded the next day with a win against Columbia Basin 3-0, setting up for the final match against Wake Tech an hour later.

The final round matchups are available on the NJCAAE’s Twitch feed: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2326137768.

Members of the Rocket League team include Tyler Knight, Brady Stroud, Donald Walton, Antony Polinsky and Connor Dagel.

Daytona State’s Valorant, Overwatch 2 teams and two Super Smash Bros. players also made it to postseason play. The Valorant and Overwatch 2 teams made it to Round 1 of the national postseason and Super Smash Bros. players Carlos Rivera and Russel Bader made it to the regional postseason.

Daytona State’s Esports program has brought home two national championships in as many semesters. Earlier this year, Daytona State’s Super Smash Brothers Ultimate player David Krol closed out a perfect season, beating Madison College in the Grand Finals of the NJCAAE Spring National Championships.
