Earn College Credit

At Daytona State College students can earn college credit through testing. Assessment Services offers testing through CLEP, DSST, or foreign language credit through BYUFLATS.

  • College Board’s College -Level Examination Program (CLEP)

    The College Board’s College - Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds to demonstrate their mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit. Students can earn credit for what they already know by getting qualifying scores on any of the 34 exams.

    Cost:

    • $95.00 Fee payable to CLEP online in advance
    • $30.00 Proctor fee payable to Daytona State College prior to sitting for an exam. 

    Additional Information:

    • CLEP exam registration must be completed by test-takers online through the CLEP website before coming to the test center to take a CLEP.
    • French, German and Spanish language testing through CLEP, for other languages please see the Bigham Young University Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS) for testing information.
    • Each test-taker can print a Registration Ticket with Ticket ID that must be presented at the test center as proof of payment (can also be shown electronically).
    • Proctor fee of $30 can be paid the day of the test but it is recommended to pay ahead of time by calling the Student Accounts office.
    • Please plan on arriving for your test at least 2 to 2.5 hours before closing .
    • CLEP official score reports will be sent to the Records Department at the college/university student selects. Assessment Services does not maintain copies of CLEP scores reports.
  • DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)

    DANTES Subject Standardized Tests- DSST is a nationally recognized Credit-by-Exam Program that gives students the opportunity to get college credit for learning acquired outside the traditional classroom. With more than 30 exam titles in college subject areas such as Social Sciences, Math, Applied Technology, Business, Physical Sciences, and Humanities, DSST exams shorten the pathway to graduation while reducing college costs. 

    Cost:

    • $100.00 Fee payable to DSST when you take the exam at the testing center (debit or credit card will be required)
    • $30.00 Proctor fee payable to Daytona State College prior to sitting for an exam. 

    Additional Information:

    • DSST exam information and a list of exams can be found online through the DSST website.
    • Proctor fee of $30 can be paid the day of the test but it is recommended to pay ahead of time by callingthe Student Accounts office
    • Please plan on arriving for your test at least 2 to 2.5 hours before closing .
  • Brigham Young University Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (BYUFLATS)

    Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS) is a language testing program offered through Brigham Young University that allows students all across the United States to take the FLATS test at a college or university in their area, and receive up to 12 college credits. 

    Spanish, French, and German must be taken through CLEP, not BYUFLATS.

    Cost:

    • $50.00 Fee payable to BYUFLATS when you register for the exam.
    • $30.00 Proctor fee payable to Daytona State College prior to sitting for an exam. 

    Additional Information:

    • BYUFLATS exam information, list of languages, and registration can be found online through the BYUFLATS website. 
    • The following languages can be taken for credit that will be applied to a Daytona State College transcript: Arabic, Mandarin (Chinese), or Russian
    • All other foreign language exams from Brigham Young University (BYU) may be taken to satisfy the foreign language requirement for the Associate of Arts or Bachelors degree at Daytona State College (proficiency only - no credit awarded). 
    • Proctor fee of $30 can be paid the day of the test but it is recommended to pay ahead of time by calling the Student Accounts office.
    • Please plan on arriving for your test at least 2 to 2.5 hours before closing .

  • Assessment of Prior Learning Experience (APLE)

    At Daytona State College, we recognize that students come to our institution from a variety of backgrounds. We value the training and knowledge you may have gained through employment, time served in the military, vocational education and specific experiences. The APLE program lets you turn your skills and knowledge into college credit.

    Credit is provided for experiences which have a theoretical and experiential base related to your course work. Credit is only given for courses offered at Daytona State College and is provided for those parts of an AS, AA, BAS or BS degree or certificate which you have mastered. All methods of earning credit must meet equivalent classroom standards (State Rule 6E-2.0041).

    APLE credit may be earned through a portfolio. Portfolios (Fee: $60.00 per course)

    To earn credit through the APLE program, you must meet the following requirements:
    • Be currently registered in a degree (AA, AS, BAS, or BS) or certificate program at Daytona State. All credit for courses earned through APLE must be appropriately related to the AA, AS, BAS, or BS degree program on record at Daytona State.
    • Meet with the Department Chair of your current program to see if your previous experience can be satisfied with APLE credit and to understand the limitations associated with earning credit prior to completing the APLE registration process. 
    • Complete the eligibility verification document and registration forms with Department Chair.  
    • Make payment of all fees prior to submitting portfolio and signed documents to Assessment Services for review. Students MUST present a valid photo ID when submitting documents to Assessment Services.
    • No grade is awarded for credits earned through APLE
    • Course credits are not used to calculate your GPA.
    • Credits will not be awarded for courses in which you already have a grade on your transcript.

    If you plan to transfer to another college/university, you should contact that institution to confirm that APLE credits are accepted. Credits earned through APLE may not transfer to other institutions. It is your responsibility to consult with the institution where you want to transfer to ensure that the credits will be accepted.

    Credit awarded for prior experiential learning shall not exceed 25% of the units required for completion of the program. The maximum number of credits that can be earned through the combined total of transfer, examination or experiential learning is 75% of the degree or certificate program. Active U.S. military members are excluded from this requirement.

Please note that at Daytona State College:

  • No letter grade (A, B, C) is given for credit earned through the the test given above.    
  • The maximum number of credits that can be earned through the combined total of AP, IB, CLEP, DSST, BYUFLATS, and APLE portfolio is 75% of your degree or certificate program. (45 credits for an AA degree).
  • Credit by examination may not duplicate ordinary credit, dual enrollment credit or other credits earned through examination.
  • Most test have a waiting period for retakes of failed or stopped tests.
  • There is NO refund for a failed or stopped test.
