All Daytona State College campuses will close at 5 p.m. today, December 19 for Winter Break. The College will reopen at 8 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2025. During the break, you can still apply to DSC for the upcoming Spring semester, and current students can register for classes in the student portal.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
English for Academic Purposes is an English language program that focuses on helping international and immigrant students acquire advanced competencies in academic English that are necessary to complete your degree program.

We offer two levels of coursework to match your English language goals – High Intermediate and Advanced. Each level covers the same topics. Courses count as elective credit hours.

  • Academic Speaking & Listening: You will develop speaking & listening skills to participate in class discussions and make academic presentations.
  • Writing & Grammar: You will develop writing & grammar skills needed to write academic essays and other academic writing assignments.
  • Academic Reading: You will develop vocabulary and reading comprehension skills with academically appropriate texts and reading.

High Intermediate 1500

  • EAP1500 - Speaking & Listening (3 credit hours)
  • EAP1520 - Academic Reading (3 credit hours)
  • EAP1585 - Academic Writing & Grammar (6 credit hours)

Advanced 1600

  • EAP1600 - Speaking & Listening (3 credit hours)
  • EAP1620 - Academic Reading (3 credit hours)
  • EAP1685 - Academic Writing & Grammar (6 credit hours)

Intensive English Program (IEP)
The Intensive English Program is designed for non-native speakers who want to strengthen their English language skills for personal enrichment or academic preparation. The four intensive and immersive courses are a total of 20 hours per week and can be completed in a single semester. (No part-time option is offered for this program).

Each Intensive English Program class is five hours a week.

  • IEP400 - Communication
  • IEP420 - Grammar
  • IEP440 - Writing
  • IEP460 - Reading

Cost: $3,000 per semester

Admission requirements
If you are planning to earn a degree from Daytona State College, you must meet the following requirements for admission:

  • Have U.S. resident status or have a student visa.
  • Score 5.5 or better on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, score 61 or better on The of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL IBT), or complete the English for Academic Purposes Advanced program (1600).
  • To receive the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (I-20 certificate) for admission to the English for Academic Purposes program, you must achieve a score of 5.0 or better on the IELTS, or a base score of 50 or better on the TOEFL IBT.
  • To receive an I-20 certificate for admission to the Intensive English Program, you must achieve a score of 4.5 or better on the IELTS, or a base score of 36 or better on the TOEFL IBT.
  • Take the Accuplacer test to determine which programs you qualify for. A score of 100 or more allows you access to the English for Academic Purposes Advanced program (1600). A score of 85-99 allows you access to the English for Academic Purposes High Intermediate program (1500). A score of 70-84 allows you access to the Intensive English Program. Ask about arranging to take the Accuplacer in your home country to guarantee space if needed.
