Daytona State passes leadership baton in planning and development

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Nov. 2, 2009) - Dr. Angela M. Falconetti has been named Vice President for Planning, Development and Institutional Effectiveness at Daytona State College, replacing Dr. Charles Carroll, who is retiring after more than 30 years at the College.

“Charles Carroll has been one of the finest college leaders I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” said Dr. Kent Sharples, president of Daytona State. “The entire college community is going to miss him. At the same time, we are looking forward to the insight and expertise Angela Falconetti will bring to the position.”

Dr. Falconetti is widely published and nationally recognized as an authority on 2+2 articulation between community colleges and universities as related to the community college baccalaureate degree. In her new position, she will oversee strategic planning for Daytona State, as well as the College’s Planning Council, institutional research, resource development, professional development, international development, selected College-university partnerships, and the College’s accreditation efforts by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). She previously was Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville.

Dr. Falconetti also serves as associate editor for The Journal for College Orientation and Transition and an editorial board member for the Community College Journal of Research and Practice. Prior to joining Daytona State, she completed an endowed post-doctoral fellowship at The University of Texas at Austin’s Community College Leadership Program, serving as a research associate with the Community College Survey of Student Engagement and the Survey of Entering Student Engagement. She also served as special assistant for the Deputy Assistant for Community Colleges and the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Vocational and Adult Education in Washington, D.C. There, she assisted with the advancement of national community college funding, research and programs, and was instrumental in creating an international community college forum on the development of community colleges in the Middle East and North Africa. She received the 2007 national research award from the National Orientation Directors Association, the 2007 University of North Florida Outstanding Dissertation Award, and the 2003 University of North Florida Outstanding Academic Advisor Award.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University, and her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership from the University of North Florida with concentrations in higher education and adult learning.

Dr. Carroll joined the College in 1978 as a faculty member teaching respiratory therapy, professional ethics and psychology. He chaired Daytona State’s Allied Health Department for seven years, was Dean of Health Careers and Wellness for five years, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for four years, Vice President of Planning and Development for three years and Senior Vice President of Planning, Development and Institutional Effectiveness for four years.

As Daytona State’s SACS Liaison, he has worked extensively on college accreditation matters, particularly during the SACS approval process that in 2005 designated the college a Level II institution authorized to award baccalaureate degrees. He also chaired the college’s Planning Council, which was cited by SACS for its exemplary practice and model of institutional governance.

Dr. Carroll earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Master of Education degree from Georgia State University. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Capella University and a Doctor of Education degree from Nova Southeastern University.

Dr. Carroll is the author of several books, including a nationally used text for respiratory care, “Legal Issues and Ethical Dilemmas in Respiratory Care.” He also authored the College’s 50th Anniversary book, “Daytona Beach Community College – Fifty Years of Shaping Our Community.”  Dr. Carroll is quick to point out that retirement from the College is not retirement for him, but is merely a transition to other career options.
