Daytona State announces faculty scholarly accomplishments

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Oct. 12, 2009) - In cooperation with the Office of Faculty Development at Daytona State College, the Center for Interdisciplinary Writing and Research announces the following scholarly accomplishments by its members, who have either presented, or will present their work at a CIWR meeting or as part of the CIWR public Colloquium Series with the Southeast Museum of Photography.

Gary Monroe, professor, School of Photography, has published his most recent work, “Florida’s American Heritage River: Images from the St. Johns Region”, University of Florida Press, which Monroe and historian, Mallory O’Connor, co-authored. 

Seth Blazer, assistant professor of English, School of Humanities and Communication, will be presenting an essay on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at the South Atlantic Modern Language Association Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  The essay is tentatively entitled “Unmasking the American Way: An Investigation of the Dual Ideological Identity of the New Wave of Superhero Films.” It will be a part of the “Current and Emergent” Panel.

Rachel Owens, assistant professor and Baccalaureate Studies librarian, will be presenting as part of a panel discussion Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy in Savannah.  The panel is titled “Embedded Librarians: Partnering with Faculty in the Virtual Classroom,” and her co-presenters are Dee Bozeman, Andy Todd, Barbara Alderman and Min Tong, all from the University of Central Florida.

Len Lempel, professor of History, School of Behavioral and Social Sciences, is publishing a chapter, “Toms and Bombs: The Black Civil Rights Struggle in Daytona Beach” in Irvin D. S. Winsboro (ed.), Old South, New South, Or Down South:  Florida in the Civil Rights Era, West Virginia University Press (publication scheduled for fall 2009).

Richard Grego, associate professor of Philosophy, Religion, Cultural History, School of Behavioral and Social Sciences, is presenting a paper, “An Evolving Dialectic: Contesting Conceptions of Nature in American Philosophical and Cultural History” at the Annual Conference of the Agricultural History Society at Rollins College in June, 2010. It will be part of a panel on “Conservation Thought and the U.S. Experience 1890-1990,” and is co-presented by Leslie Poole of the University of Florida, Julian Chambliss of Rollins College, and Sarah Mittlefehlt of Green Mountain College. 

Jessica Kester and Liz Barnes, English faculty in the School of Humanities and Communication, presented “Building a Bridge: Using Rhetoric to Narrow the Gap between Prep Writing and College Composition,” at the Florida Developmental Education Association Conference on October 2, 2009.

John Conner, professor, College of Education, presented “Revelation Theory of Learning (RTL):  A Teaching & Learning Theory (PK – 20) for 21st Century Learners,” during the Florida Association of Teacher Educators Annual Conference on October 10, 2009.

Dr. Casey Blanton, assistant chair, School of Humanities and Communication, will present “QUANTA Collaboration: Activities for Social Engagement and Social Action,” at the 14th Annual Learning Communities Conference in Atlanta, November 2009,

The CIWR is the faculty forum for scholarly and creative writing, research, and cultural arts at Daytona State College.  It is open to all interested faculty who are working on projects for publication or presentation at any phase of development.
