Daytona State Classic Theater hosts second Celebration of William Shakespeare 

William Shakespeare Celebration, Nov. 14DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Nov. 2, 2009) – Sponsored by the School of Music, Entertainment and Art, in partnership with the School of Humanities and Communication, and Culinary Arts, Daytona State College Classic Theater presents its second Classic Theater event to celebrate the life and works of William Shakespeare.
 
Enjoy a day of Bard related activities and workshops on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mori Hosseini Center (bldg. 1200) on the College’s Daytona Beach Campus.

Workshops include:

The Pen and the Sword: Staging a Shakespearean Swordfight - experience the breathtaking excitement, thrust, and parry of a Shakespearean swordfight.
Does Shakespeare Walk Among Us? - imagine what Shakespeare would be like if he was living now.
The Bard’s Barbs: A Shakespearean Insults Workshop - thou venomed fool-born codpiece! Learn how to insult your friends and enemies with Shakespearean zingers.
The Fractured Personality in Romeo and Juliet - delve deep into the personality disorders of the Montagues and Capulets.
Rhythm and Rhyme in Shakespeare’s Time: A Sonnet Writing Workshop - unlock your creative potential in this lyrical, guided workshop.
From the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’: The Evolution of Star-Crossed Lovers - explore how unrequited love has seduced big and little screen audiences, as well as music fans.

Throughout the day, coffee and light snacks will be available through the Christopher Bean Coffee shop in the Mori Hosseini Center (bldg. 1200).

In conjunction with the Shakespeare Festival, the Southeast Museum of Photography presents a Shakespearean Film Series in the Madorsky Theater:

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7 p.m.
Shakespeare In Love (1999) - introduced and hosted by Michelle Lee, Ph.D, Daytona State College Humanities faculty. "One of the most winning and intelligent romantic comedies of the '90s, Shakespeare in Love is filled with such good will, sunny romance, snappy one-liners, and devilish cleverness that it's absolutely irresistible.

Wednesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m. *
West Side Story (1961) - introduced and hosted by Laura Stewart, Daytona State College Humanities adjunct faculty. "The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods and ethnicities.

Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m.
Romeo and Juliet (Ballet – 1966) - introduced and hosted by Laura Stewart, Daytona State College Humanities adjunct faculty. The famed Royal Ballet production starring Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. This historic performance captures the greatest dance partnership of the twentieth century at the peak of their careers. Filmed at Covent Garden.

*Accompany your film or theater experience on Wednesday, November 11, with dinner at Café 101, prior to the showing of West Side Story or performance of Romeo and Juliet. To make reservations at Café 101, call (386) 506-3859.

"Romeo and Juliet", has nightly performances in the J. M. Goddard Center (bldg. 230) beginning Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and continue through Saturday, Nov. 14, as well as Friday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 22. Matinee performances also are scheduled for  Sunday, Nov. 15 and Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.
 
Admission is free to Daytona State College and Volusia County students, all others $8 per person or $15 for two. Tickets are available in advance at the Daytona State Box Office located in the Theater Center (bldg. 220) on the Daytona Beach Campus at 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd. Box Office Hours: Wednesday - Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact the Daytona State College Box Office by calling (386) 506-3042.
 
Tickets also will be sold the day of each performance at the Box Office, which opens one-hour prior to performance.
 
The J. M. Goddard Center (bldg. 230) is located on the Daytona Beach Campus at 1200 W. International Speedway Boulevard.
 
The performing arts programs at Daytona State prepare students for a future in music, drama and dance while also providing entertainment opportunities for the community through a variety of events produced each semester. Proceeds from tickets are used to support the Performing Arts Scholarship program at Daytona State.
