The Restoration of Chicken Island (New Smyrna Beach)

Efforts are being made by Volusia County Environmental Management and the Marine Discovery Center (MDC) to remove invasive species from Chicken Island in New Smyrna Beach, and restore the island’s surrounding oyster beds and mangroves. Implementation of this project will improve water quality surrounding the island, prevent erosion of Chicken Island’s shores, and create/restore finfish habitat in the Indian River Lagoon.

On the 11th April 2009, a group of volunteers from our very own Daytona State Environmental Club volunteered, along with their friends and families, at the MDC in New Smyrna to make Oyster Mats as part of the shoreline restoration of Chicken Island.

A good time was had by all and the best part was, that we made steps towards saving our local environment. To the right, is a video made by one of our own club members, showing more information about the quilting of an Oyster Reef.

The Marine Discovery Center are looking for volunteers on an ongoing basis, just call 866-257-4828 (Toll Free) to find out more.
