Daytona State Captures 7th National Title

Golf 2014 Champs

May 15, 2014 – Daytona Beach, FL:

Daytona State College Women’s Golf Team captured the 2014 NJCAA National Championship hosted at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, FL.  This is the seventh National Championship title for the Lady Falcons and the 4th title in the past 5 years.  The Lady Falcons led the field from start to finish and ended up winning by 20 strokes over Seminole State College of Florida.  The Lady Falcons have now won the NJCAA title in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014.

Freshman standout, Tiffany Chan dominated the individual competition winning by 7 strokes over teammates So Young Hwang and Mary Dawson who tied for 2nd.  Chan is the fourth individual champion Daytona State College has produced in the history of the program.  Chan led from start to finish with scores of 68-74-74 (216).  DSC had four players finish in the top five including Hwang who shot 75-74-74 (223), Dawson who shot 74-73-76 (223) and Whitney Stevenson who finished 5th with scores of 73-78-74 (225).  All four of these players earned 1st team All-American Honors.  Daytona’s fifth player, Courtney Cobb had a strong showing by finishing 12th overall with scores of 81-77-79 (237) and earned Honorable Mention All-American status.

“I am so proud of all of these young ladies”, commented Coach Laura Brown.  “This is such a special group of student-athletes and they had a fantastic year.  To finish off the year with a National Championship was exciting and fulfilling for these players.  They worked very hard this year and their dedication was the key to their success.  This is one of the most talented groups of young ladies I have had the pleasure to coach in my sixteen years of coaching and they really deserved this win.  I couldn’t be happier for them.”

The Lady Falcons got off to a great start in round one, as they posted their low round of the tournament with a score of 290, just 2-over par as a team putting them in the lead by 12 shots after round one.  Daytona State increased their lead to 20 strokes after round two, as they posted a team score of 298 which was eight shots better than second place team Seminole State College.  Both Daytona State and Seminole State had solid third round scores in heavy winds shooting 298 as a team.  The final day had to be cancelled due to bad weather so Daytona State won the team competition by 20 strokes over Seminole State who finished 2nd, 51 shots ahead of third place team McLennan.

The Lady Falcons return three players from this group for the 2013-2014 season including Tiffany Chan, Whitney Stevenson and Courtney Cobb all who earned All-American Honors.
