Daytona State College Women's Golf
2008-2009 FCCAA Female Academic Team-of-the-Year
Season Outlook
The Daytona State College Women’s Golf Team carries a tremendous amount of confidence heading into the spring season. The 2009-2010 fall season was the most successful in the history of the 12 year program, as it was filled with record breaking scores that resulted in team and individual victories. The Lady Falcons competed in 5 tournaments in the fall and recorded 2 team wins, 2 individual wins, a team 2nd place win and numerous other top individual finishes, all while competing against strong NCAA programs. The fall schedule provided the team with some of the strongest competition to date and they showed that they were up for the challenge. With 4 out of 5 of our tournaments being NCAA DI events, and these players consistently posting top finishes, they have proved that they can compete at this top level. Playing at this level motivates these players to work hard and strive to reach their true potential.
This year’s squad is very young, as we have 5 freshmen and 3 sophomores. The freshman class this year is the most talented group ever recruited. Their talent showed as the top-3 players for the fall were all freshmen. Mitsuki Katahira from Tokyo, Japan led this group of freshmen by posting an impressive 73.7 scoring average for the fall season and recorded one individual title and 3 other top-5 finishes. Amy West from Valrico, FL, also a freshman, posted a scoring average of 75 for the fall and recorded one individual title and one other top-5 finish. Freshman, Ericka Schneider from Bradenton, FL posted a 76.4 scoring average and recorded 2 top-10 finishes. Sophomore Jennifer Gartin from Port St. Lucie, FL, a Stetson University transfer held the 4th position for the fall with a scoring average of 76.7 and recorded 2 top-10 finishes. Rounding out the top-5 for the fall was sophomore Ashley Mooney from Port St. Lucie, FL who posted a 77.7 scoring average and freshman, Barbara Malone from West Palm Beach, FL who posted scoring average of 80. Other players for the Lady Falcons include sophomore Lauren Benetti from Celebration, FL with an 80 scoring average and Cassie Cleary from Punta Gorda, FL with an 82 scoring average.
The Lady Falcons goal this 2009-2010 season is to win the NJCAA National Championship and to continue their success in the classroom. The Lady Falcons have won the NJCAA National Championship 3 times, but their last victory came in 2005. This group of players is determined to regain our National Championship status and is poised to win in impressive fashion. The Lady Falcons are currently #1 in the NJCAA rankings and are very positive about their chances of winning the National Championship in May. Academically the women’s golf team has shown that they are equally dedicated to their studies as they are to their sport. The Lady Falcons have won the FCCAA Female Academic Team of the Year Award 3 years in a row now and also placed 2nd nationally in 2008-2009 with a 3.57 team GPA.
The 2009-2010 spring season consists of 5 tournaments, the NJCAA region VIII qualifier, and the 2009 NJCAA National Championship. Our confidence from the successes in the fall will carry us into the spring season. Our impressive finishes and scores should continue as this team is loaded with talented players that are extremely confident and motivated to improve.
