Expanding the On-Campus Living Experience
Our capital campaign to build a second student residence hall on the Daytona Beach Campus is underway and you are invited to help our students!
The new facility, which is expected to house approximately 256 students, could open as early as Fall 2026.
Our first residence hall has been a resounding success. It opened to full capacity in Fall 2022. It is already at full capacity for the upcoming academic year. And we have received more than 1,000 student housing applications in less than one year.
When we began studying the possibility of building housing on campus in 2018, a study we commissioned showed the college could support more than 500 students. Initial plans for the second residence hall call for approximately 52,000 square feet of space and approximately 256 beds.
We know that students who live on campus are more engaged with their instructors, utilize academic support systems more frequently, and participate more in on-campus activities.
With the DSC Foundation, we’re launching a $15 million capital campaign. Donations from the community will ensure our residence hall will be an affordable and accessible option for students. We need your support. Make your gift here, or contact the Daytona State College Foundation at Foundation@DaytonaState.edu or by calling (386) 506-3195.
You can learn more at the new residence hall web page and keep tabs on the campaign’s progress.
Honoring Employee Charles “Chuck” Fordham
It is with great pleasure that we share news of Charles “Chuck” Fordham receiving a Service Excellence Award this week at our Senior Executive Staff meeting.
Chuck joined us in 2018 as a Lead Officer on our Campus Safety team, but his dedication to service greatly precedes his time with us.
Chuck served 22 years in the U.S. Army and Florida Army National Guard, retiring as a Captain, and then went on to serve 21 years with the Daytona Beach Police Department, retiring as Lieutenant. He worked for the Volusia County School Board from 2012 to 2018, serving as a full-time substitute teacher at Atlantic High School, where he found time to coach the football and basketball teams, mentoring many of the student-athletes. He was also President and Coach of Daytona Beach Pop Warner Football and Cheer Program from 2004 to 209 and coached basketball and softball for the Daytona Beach Police Athletic League from 2004 to 2012.
From his position as Lead Officer he was promoted to Regional Coordinator in 2020 and one year later transferred to Veterans Services, where he now serves as our Veterans Services Coordinator.
We have approximately 1,100 students who are veterans or their family members. Chuck and his team work closely with them to complete the often daunting paperwork required for them to get their educational benefits. He took the lead on rechartering the student Vet Club on campus, which has become quite active, including providing support at our convocation and commencement ceremonies. Chuck also restarted the Student Veterans student worker program, allowing us to have a veteran student worker on every campus, ensuring all student veterans and dependents receive quality service and support .
Thanks to Chuck’s efforts, in collaboration with the Institutional Research team, DSC has maintained our Military Friendly School status and been designed a Military Friendly Gold Status for 2023-2024. Chuck was named a 2023 Veteran Champion in Higher Education by Viqtory. And DSC was recently awarded the state’s Purple Star Campus Designation for DSC’s commitment and support of veterans and their families.
Chuck is also responsible for organizing our Veterans Day Ceremony events each year in November on every campus. For Veterans Month, he is coordinating new events to honor our veterans throughout November.
Please join us in congratulating Chuck for his outstanding service and commitment to our mission.
Honoring Employee Kathleen Thompson
Honoring Kathleen Thompson
It is with great pleasure that we share news of Kathleen Thompson receiving a Service Excellence Award this week at our Senior Executive Staff meeting.
Since joining us in 2007 as the Administrative Assistant for the School of Humanities, Kathleen has been the backbone of the School, known for her expert organizational and problem-solving skills. Her unwavering commitment to supporting students, faculty, and coworkers is truly remarkable, and she is recognized by colleagues as the “go-to” person, handling all responsibilities with grace and efficiency.
Many of the student art exhibitions and performances are only possible with Kathleen’s
administrative work in scheduling classes and onboarding adjuncts. Her organizational
skills allow faculty to focus on teaching, while her attention to detail and responsiveness
–often behind the scenes—are highly valued by faculty, staff, and students.
Please join us in congratulating Kathleen for her outstanding service and commitment
to our mission.
