The Virtual Writing Center is open Monday-Friday from 8-5.
Due to current circumstances, all tutoring is taking place virtually. The Daytona campus writing center is open for resource usage ONLY at this time. Please continue to check our homepage for updates on CWC practices and the DSC COVID-19 update page for campus-wide updates.
Daytona State College students, as well as DSC alumni, staff, and faculty can book a 45-minute appointment with a Writing Center staff member. We will work on all phases of writing and create strategies for more effective communication. We allow a limited number of walk-ins per day, but because they are on a first-come, first-serve basis, we encourage writers to book an appointment ahead of time to ensure availability.
Typically, an appointment will include:
Review: Coming prepared is essential. Consultations are most productive when students bring in prompts or research pertaining to their project, so tutors will have an understanding of the purpose of the assignment. Students will get the most out of a consultation if they proactively participate in the session with questions and concerns.
Discussion: It can be intimidating to discuss personal strengths and weaknesses in communication skills. Because the nature of our consultations promotes collaboration, open discussion, and constructive feedback, students will leave the Writing Center feeling more confident in their skillset and their ability to talk about it.
Strategies: We will work with writers on setting an agenda for the consultation. A student may come in with the intent of discussing grammar and mechanics, and in the process of discussing those concerns, a tutor may suggest other areas of focus during the appointment. At the end of the session, we find it important to review strategies and goals established during that time and apply them to current and future projects.
