Lady Falcons cheered on by hometown crowd
Coach Laura Stegall can stand tall today alongside her first-year volleyball team – victorious in their inaugural home match. The women battled through an exciting hard-fought contest over Indian River State Wednesday night, Aug. 27, following a tournament last Friday-Saturday in Jacksonville.
The 14 players, cheered on by a sizable hometown crowd, were clearly pumped throughout the 5-game match, scoring 20-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-22 and 15-7. Co-captains Jazmin Alexander and Shelby Jelinek commented before the game that they were excited for the return match against Indian River, which lost to DSC at the tournament.
Before the match, the team heard tips from 4x Olympic gold medalist Lloy Ball and his dad, American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Famer Arnie Ball. The duo also gave tips to invited players from local schools, posing with them for photos with the gold medal.
The volleyball schedule offers a number of future home games, free to all Daytona State employees and students. The next home match is a tournament on Sept. 14. For all Daytona State athletics, click here.
