Daytona State rolls to MFC crown
DAYTONA BEACH -- Central Florida Community College boasted the marquee player in its showdown against Daytona State Wednesday night.
But not even highly recruited Ricardo Ratliffe could stop Daytona State -- now officially the marquee team of the Mid-Florida Conference.
The Falcons claimed their first conference title in five years -- and a trip to next month's state JUCO tournament -- by defeating CFCC 82-74 at the Lemerand Center.
"This means a lot," said Daytona State junior Marquise Glaze, whose Falcons are only one year removed from a 12-19 campaign. "We fell back a little bit the last two years, but we went out and recruited and came back and played as a team."
Glaze was the team leader Wednesday, shaking off a slow start to score a team-high 19 points. The last of those points were the most pivotal for Daytona Beach (21-6, 8-0 MFC)
With Daytona State clinging to a two-point lead and the ball with 53 seconds remaining, Glaze took a perfect pass from Ramoane Jordan on a back-door play for a layup.
"A broken play," Daytona State coach Anthony Andre conceded afterward. "The shot clock was winding down, driving to the basket he broke. Just teamwork."
Josh Proctor misfired for CFCC (24-6, 6-2) on the ensuing possession, and the Falcons took care of business from there by sinking six free throws in the final 32 seconds.
"I'm very proud of them," Anthony Andre said. "These kids work hard and they're very good students and they play as a team. When we started out the year people weren't taking us seriously."
Ratliffe, who attracted scouts from Cincinnati and Alabama on Wednesday night, proved to be a handful for Daytona State defenders. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward scored a game-high 26 points on 12-for-18 shooting.
But his individual exploits were offset by a tremendous team effort by Daytona State, which placed five players in double digits and outrebounded the Patriots 41-27.
"That's what we talked about," Andre said. "We talked about defense and rebounding the basketball."
Will Neighbour contributed 17 points and nine rebounds for Daytona State and Leke Lewu added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
"The big thing for us was to stay aggressive," said Glaze, who took an elbow late in the game and was icing his jaw afterward. "Even when we were up 10 at halftime we knew we needed to stay aggressive, and we did that."
