Golf - Lady Falcons Capture Opening Season Event
The Daytona State College Women's Golf Team began their quest to repeat as NJCAA National Champions by winning their first event of the season. The Lady Falcons captured the Lady Falcon Invitational at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, FL.
With a score of 595, the Lady Falcons won the tournament by 17 shots over second place Lynn University who are the reigning NCAA Division II National Champions. Florida Tech, Seminole State College, and Florida Southern rounded out the top five.
The Falcons were led by tournament co-medalist Tiffany Chan, a freshman from Hong Kong, who shot scores of 71-73. Chan ended up in a tie for first place with Emily Rymer of Florida Southern. The two were declared co-champions since a playoff could not be completed due to bad weather. Whitney Stevenson, a freshman from Canton, GA finished in third place with scores of 76-70 and sophomore So Young Hwang from South Korea, finished in 4th place with scores of 71-76.
Falcon head coach Laura Brown was very pleased by the season opening event. "I am very happy and proud of my players on their impressive win today. They played very consistently and deserved this win. I was especially pleased with my top three players and it was great to see my freshmen play so well. Having Tiffany win her first event individually was impressive. Additionally Whitney's second round was her best round ever and I'm very excited for her. This win should really set the tone for the season and I think the entire team has gained a tremendous amount of confidence after playing so well in their first event.
