Friday, March 20 Update to Students, Faculty & Staff: A Message from President Thomas LoBasso

Dear students,

Across the nation, we are facing unforeseen challenges we could have never predicted just a few weeks ago. As we continue to move forward through this unpredictable time, I am grateful for all of you who make up the Daytona State family. Despite the circumstances, what remains clear is that we are all committed to doing what is best for the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff.

We have all been tested in ways we could never imagine just a short time ago, including asking students to not come to any DSC campus to help limit the spread of the virus. This week began the effort to transition the College (academic and support services) to online and virtual operations.

We are nationally recognized for our online programs, so we have the expertise and staff to transition our face-to-face classes into the online environment. We know you understand this is a major undertaking, so thank you for your patience as your instructors continue to move courses online. In the coming days and weeks as we practice social distancing and self-isolation, stay engaged in your coursework – keep communicating with your instructors and classmates. March 23 is not only the date for the online transition, but it is also the 7-week mark for the full spring term. You’ve successfully reached this point, so stay strong, communicate with your instructors, and finish strong.

Each of us might need a little help coping or figuring out what to do in these uncertain times, so please call or email our Student Development Services, which include the Center for Women and Men, Counseling and Accessibility Services, and the Student Advocate.  Visit www.DaytonaState.edu/COVID-19 for college updates, the Student FAQ, and contact information for student support departments.

Again, thank you for your patience, we know this is a trying time for everyone. Stay safe and remember to reach out to someone – you're not alone! If you have any other questions, please contact the StudentAdvocate@DaytonaState.edu.

Dear faculty & staff,

Across the nation, we are facing unforeseen challenges we could have never predicted just a few weeks ago. As we continue to move forward through this unpredictable time, I am grateful for all of you who make up the Daytona State family. Despite the circumstances, what remains clear is that we are all committed to doing what is best for the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff.

We have been and will continue to be tested in ways we could never imagine, yet you have risen to the occasion. The effort to protect our students and ourselves began this week with moving the College (academic and support services) to online and virtual operations.

We are nationally recognized for our online programs, so we have the expertise and staff to transition our face-to-face classes into the online environment. We realize this has not been easy and that the work will continue into the coming weeks and months. Rest assured, we’re all in this together and will continue to support each other. As reiterated by Dr. Locklear in a recent meeting, individual faculty, academic support staff, department chairs and the FIC staff have gone above and beyond to ensure instructors and students are making the transition as smoothly as possible.

Staff has taken huge strides to move our day-to-day operations online and transition as many people as possible to telecommute from home on a temporary basis. Due to your actions this week, we’re able to serve our current and prospective students effectively while significantly reducing the number of staff remaining on campus. Kudos to the support staff as they manage the deluge of questions coming through the phones, emails and live chat, the custodial staff for wiping down and sanitizing our work areas throughout the day, and IT for distributing laptops and keeping the network up and running. A special thanks to the Campus Safety and custodial staff for coming in over Spring Break to deep clean and disinfect the campuses.

The new reality of social distancing is summed up in a new hashtag – #AloneTogether. Each of us might need a little help coping or figuring out what to do, so keep in mind that the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to you and your family as part of our DSC benefits. This free service is confidential, and the assistance is immediate, personal and available when you need it. Our Benefits Department sent an email earlier in the week with the EAP brochure, and feel free to call them for additional information.

The words to live by this week were “flexibility” and “creativity”, and you have all proven just how flexible and creative we can be. Thank you for your patience – with each other, and with our students. Your professionalism is the proverbial calm in the storm, and as always, lifts Daytona State College to new levels of success.
